Capital Improvement Updates

The Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is proud to announce the following Park Improvement Projects:

As part of the Parks Planning Division's ongoing upgrading and replacing of outdated equipment and amenities in our parks continues, the following projects have been recently completed:

Par Course Equipment Installation
New and exciting Par Course exercise equipment has been installed at Lindberg, Fox Hills, Blanco and Veterans Parks. This new equipment provides opportunities for more complete, challenging and stimulating work outs and has met with much acclaim at each new site. The new equipment is made of stronger, more durable material that will endure longer than the previous wood equipment. The new equipment utilizes the person's own body weight to provide resistance and an isometric workout, and allows the user to focus on a particular type of work-out to develop and condition specific muscles in the body. This installation helps to further the Parks Master Plan goals of promoting healthy lifestyles and activities for all.

Little League Field Leveling Project
The Field Leveling Project at the Culver City Little League and AYSO Fields at Culver City Park has been completed. This project was much needed due do to the ongoing settling at the fields. The project addressed a new drainage system, upgrading the irrigation, adding 620 cubic yards of top soil and adding 42,000 square feet of sod. By raising the level of the fields, they are now safer for the children to play. Funds were provided by a Prop 40 grant and a contribution from the AYSO.

ADA Path of Travel – Veterans Park
An ADA accessible route constructed out of decomposed granite (DG) has been installed at Veterans Park. The path links all areas of the park beginning at the Barman Avenue handicap parking stall. This ADA path of travel will allow anyone in a wheelchair to have access to the Plunge, picnic pavilion, and playgrounds. This project was completed using CDBG and Prop A Funds.

Fox Hills Neighborhood Association PEP Grant
In October, the Fox Hills Neighborhood Association in collaboration with Parks Division staff, celebrated their 5th annual “Fox Hills Park Pride Day”. This year, the Association planted 200 plants, added new tables & benches, and new barbecue grills were installed throughout the park. They also detailed and cleaned the park of weeds and trash. In addition to the $500 PEP Grant sponsored by the City, Lezlie Brazil and the Fox Hills Neighborhood Association, were successful in getting donations from several sponsors, such as, Culver City Parks & Service Foundation, Symantec, Westfield Corporation and Home Depot.

The following project is currently "Under Construction":

Veterans Park 2-5 Years Age Appropriate Playground Project
Installation has begun on a new 2–5 Age Appropriate Playground that will replace the "Castle" playground area that was removed last year to make room for the KaBoom! Playground Project age 5 to 12 years. The installation of this new playground will ensure that children 2-5 years old have a safe and challenging area to play. This project is being funded through Prop 40 & Prop A grants. The California Conservation Corps will install the engineered wood fiber as the Youth Employment component of the project. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2010.

Culver City Dog Park – Phase II

This project builds on the work already done by the Friends of the Culver City Dog Park, a 501(c)(3) organization, to make Culver City’s only off-leash dog park the best playground for dogs and their owners on the Westside. Phase II of the Dog Park’s construction is funded entirely by County of Los Angeles Regional Park and Open Space District Proposition A Excess Funds. Look for the addition of shade structures, landscaping and irrigation, distinctive signage, fencing, paving for parking and related improvements.

Culver West Alexander Park Improvement

The goal of this project is to provide new amenities that will appeal to a wide range community members, including families, seniors and youth. The improvements are funded by County of Los Angeles Regional Park and Open Space District Proposition A Excess Funds and a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant. The main attraction will be a decomposed granite walking/jogging trail around the perimeter of the park with a unique and esthetically pleasing McConnell Boulevard passage way. Other improvements include an expanded picnic area, a garden with drought tolerant plants and improved landscaping and safety features.

Bill Botts Field Lighting Project

New baseball field lighting at Bill Botts Field in Culver City Park will enable youth groups to extend their playing and practice times. The California Youth Soccer and Development Program, a component of the 2002 Resources Bond Act (Proposition 40) funds this project which will provide state-of-the-art night lighting. New lighting technology reduces “light spillage” and enables the lighting and diagnostics to be controlled from a remote location. This improvement will benefit park users for years to come.
