Capital Improvement Updates

Culver City Playground Project

The Culver City Park Playground Improvement Project began on April 2, 2012 and is progressing on schedule.  The new site design featuring clusters of accessible playground equipment for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 will provide novel, challenging age-appropriate play.  The upgraded playground surfacing is engineered wood fibar, a safe fill material that is 100% accessible.  A few elements of the original design have been incorporated into the project, including a separate sand play area.  The installation of new replacement concrete picnic tables will be the final phase of the upgrade to the entire picnic and playground area.  The major elements of this project are funded by Los Angeles County Proposition A Discretionary Funds.

Blanco Parcourse Equipment

We have added a new amenity to the very popular Blanco Park, which is adjacent to El Rincon Elementary School.  State of the art, physically challenging Parcourse exercise equipment designed to suit a broad range of ages and ability levels was installed at this Park and other Culver City Parks, including Fox Hills, Lindberg and Veterans’ Memorial Parks.  The equipment incorporates new technology for isometric and resistance workouts that build both endurance and strength to increase overall fitness.

El Marino Playground for Children Ages 5 to 12

This playground was redesigned to meet the demands of both challenging physical play and mental development.  The previously existing structure was outdated and way past its prime.  The new playground has a completely accessible play area with an ADA-compliant path of travel to all play components.  El Marino Playground is an extremely popular site and the project has been well-received by both children and the adults who accompany them to the Playground.

Lindberg Park Tennis Courts - New Surfacing, Fencing and Windscreens

Here is a prime example of the tennis court resurfacing that has been done at all the parks.  This improvement project included new chain link fencing as well as new surfacing, striping, nets, and windscreens.

CWA Playground Resilient Surfacing Repairs

All of our playgrounds underwent major resilient rubberized surfacing repairs this last year.  This was done in a way that made the repairs look like part of the original design with lively colors and bubble shapes, at the same time providing safe fall zones for children of all ages.

Fox Hills Parcourse Equipment

Believe it or not, some of the old and outdated wood PAR course exercise equipment was over 25 years old!  We replaced it with new state of the art, physically challenging equipment for all ages and levels that incorporate the new technology for isometric and resistance workouts.

Fox Hills Tennis Courts - New Surfacing and Windscreens

The courts in Fox Hill Park are heavily used and the new surfacing, striping and nets have made a tremendous difference in both appearance and quality of play.  At Fox Hills, the court’s windscreens were also replaced and refurbished.

Veterans' Memorial Park Playground for Children Ages 2 to 5

Young children and the adults who supervise them at the Playground are quite pleased that we have successfully relocated the Age 2 to 5 Playground area that was displaced when the new KaBOOM! Age 5 to 12 Playground was installed.  Staff scoped a new site, relocated the utilities, tree and built a completely new ADA-compliant path of travel with concrete curbs.  The fill material in both the Playground and the Path is ADA accessible and the new play equipment is both appealing and challenging.

Vets Picnic tables and BBQ’s

In addition to being an open amenity for all to enjoy, the Picnic Pavilion is also rental space for parties of 25 or more.  This upgrade, which could result in increased revenue by making the area more attractive and user-friendly, included new concrete BBQ’s, a drinking fountain and concrete picnic tables.

Irrigation Upgrades

Computerized Central Controllers have been installed at each of our Culver City Parks. These include such features as automatic system shut-offs in an emergency situation, as well as weather station satellite based connections that monitor and adjust the watering schedules. In other words, when it rains, the system not only automatically shuts down, it doesn’t restart until the ground dries out and we actually need to water! This upgrade serves as another important step in our meeting water conservation program standards and compliance with AB-1881 State Model Water Ordinance.

With the cooperation of Streets Division, the Parks Division also completed a Six Inch Mainline Upgrade at Culver City Park. Working together, staff excavated unmapped areas of the park into the road to determine where the mainline was and then replaced a long section of pipe in the street.

Culver City Park Booster Pump Replacement

A critical upgrade to the domestic and irrigation water systems at Culver City Park.  The new computerized slow start and stop dual pump system has already paid dividends with increased flows to the top level play fields that will in the long run reduce wear and tear on the pumps, as well as deliver a steadier flow of water pressure to all the facilities at the park.  This much-needed improvement is essential to our water conservation efforts in all of the parks.
