Annual Disaster Drill & the Great California ShakeOut – October 19

Culver City is in earthquake country. What we do now, before a big earthquake, will determine how we survive and how well we recover. With earthquakes an inevitable part of California’s future, we must act today to ensure that tomorrow’s disasters do not become catastrophes.

The Great ShakeOut - October 19 at 10:19 a.m.

Held annually on the third Thursday of October, the ShakeOut International Day of Action is set for Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 10:19 a.m.  During the self-led drill, participants practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”  The safe response to an earthquake is to:

Drop_ENG_Blue_OrangeDROP where you are, onto your hands and knees.
This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.

Cover_ENG_Blue_OrangeCOVER your head and neck with one arm and hand
If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter
If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)
Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs

HoldOn_ENG_Blue_OrangeHOLD ON until shaking stops
Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts
No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.

How you can participate...

At 7:00 p.m. on October 19, 2017, Culver City residents have a second opportunity to practice their disaster drills!

We are asking residents and the business community to participate in the City’s Annual Community-Wide Drill at 7:00 p.m. on October 19th.

 Participation is easy!

  1. At 7:00 p.m. Drop, Cover, Hold On.
  2. Activate your family disaster plan and ensure that everyone is “OK.”
  3. Then, place your OK sign in a window or area that is visible from the public right-of-way. If you don’t have an OK sign, feel free to download and print one or make one yourself.

How your community response teams will participate...

As we ask you to practice your disaster drills at home/work, we will simulate three disasters in different parts of the City to practice our skills. In response to these three mock disasters, your Culver City Fire Department, the Culver City Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Culver City Amateur Radio Emergency Services Team (CCARES) will activate! Some of the many activities your community response teams will practice are saving mock victims, activating search teams, practicing first aid and setting up triage stations. We will share the mock disaster locations via Nixle on the night of the drill. Keep an eye out for our emergency volunteers and first responders! Say hello, observe them in action, or volunteer to be a victim!
