Culver City Fire Department is Awarded International Reaccreditation Status

The Culver City Fire Department (CCFD) has received Reaccredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program.  The Culver City Fire Department is one of more than 250 agencies to achieve Internationally Accredited Agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE).

Accreditation Award"Our Culver City Fire Department is on an elite list with four agencies in California that have obtained accredited agency status from CFAI, as well as Class 1 status from the Insurance Services Office," said Culver City Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells.  "I'm incredibly proud of the accomplishments of the Fire Department for not only achieving reaccreditation status but also for the phenomenal efforts the team puts in as first responders for our community every day," added Mayor Sahli-Wells.

The accreditation process is ongoing, with a peer assessor site visit and meeting before the commission taking place once every five years. Mayor Sahli-Wells participated in this year's commission meeting in Atlanta and the commission meeting that took place five years ago in Dallas.  There are 22 accredited agencies in California, 12 of which are fully career departments like CCFD. 

CFAI is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment and accreditation in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities.  The CFAI process is voluntary, and provides an agency with an improvement model to assess their service delivery and performance internally and then works with a team of peers from other agencies to evaluate their completed self-assessment.

The CFAI model is a process that the Culver City Fire Department believes in and has been practicing since 1998. The award received by the Department on August 8, 2019, marked the fifth time the Department has been accredited by CFAI. With each accreditation cycle, hundreds of volunteers, internationally, seek to raise the bar in an effort to provide continuous quality improvement to their communities. Members of the Culver City Fire Department, fellow City departments and affiliated agencies have invested countless hours into the process.

Receiving the accreditation award is a major milestone to this continuous effort. CCFD is extremely grateful for the involvement and hard work of its members, the Culver City Mayor and members of City Council for their unwavering support, fellow City departments, neighboring agencies and the CFAI peer assessors and commission for their consideration and time.

It revisits the Department’s pillars—mission, vision, values—and sets forth a continuous improvement plan that offers a road map for a justifiable and sustainable future. It is a tool through which the Department assesses the community’s fire and non-fire risk, defines emergency response performance standards, determines apparatus staffing patterns, evaluate workload and ideal unit utilization, measures service delivery performance, supports strategic planning and policy development, and establishes community level service objectives.
