CulverCityFiberNetworkMunicipal Fiber Network Project

This project was initiated because the City has observed a growing demand for high speed broadband from the business community. The City routinely receives inquiries regarding the availability of high speed broadband from current and prospective businesses. Access to high speed broadband is a growing requirement for conducting business. Culver City engaged a consultant to assist with developing a high-level network design & potential business models. Project Description
Deploy a Fiber Network Infrastructure that would support providing Internet service to Culver City businesses in select areas and the Culver City School District..

Redefining Connectivity

Project Objectives
- Advancing the availability, affordability and reliability of connectivity services tailored to Culver City Businesses in select areas
- Expanding connectivity options available to the business community
- Leverage existing City infrastructure assets
Broadband is a term used to describe high speed and high quality internet access. Broadband is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and this defines the rate in which data is transmitted. 1 Mbps = Transmitting 1 million bits per second.
A Fiber Optic Network is the preferred infrastructure for delivering high speed broadband. A Fiber infrastructure can move your business data at speeds up to 100 times faster than DSL or cable modems.

Target Service Areas

The current network design has three (3) geographical service areas:
North Ring
Central Ring
South Ring

Private Sector Impacts
The proposed business model separates the infrastructure from the service. The City would provide the required infrastructure reducing the cost of entry for Internet Service Providers to provide service.

Provides an opportunity for more Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to serve the business community.

Current Update – At the regular City Council meeting of November 9, 2015 Council approved to initiate a project to build and operate a municipal fiber network that would facilitate providing high-speed Internet service to the Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD) and Culver City businesses located within defined target service areas. During this meeting, the City Council will receive additional information gathered thus far, consider comments from the public, and provide direction regarding the proposed project. The City Council may also authorize agreements that formally approve moving forward with the project.
