Umbrella serves as a visual continuation of a building and its roof line. The structure is also intended as a balcony from which the entire surrounding complex can be viewed. The name is derived from the structure's semblance to an open umbrella that has been turned upside down. Umbrella received the Los Angeles Business Council Design Award in 2000 and the AIA/LA Design Honor Award in 1999.
