Application and Selection Process
The Artist Laureate program application was launched in August 2019, open to candidates who had lived or worked in Culver City for a minimum of 5 years. Applications from artists in a variety of art disciplines (fine and visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts) were received by the mid-October deadline. An independent peer panel comprising distinguished professionals from across the art disciplines reviewed the applications for artistic quality, potential community impact, and professional development. The panel recommend visual artist Alexey Steele. At their December meeting, the Cultural Affairs Commission voted to recommend appointment of Mr. Steele, and the Culver City City Council voted to appoint Alexey Steele as Artist Laureate at their January 13, 2020 meeting.
The Artist Laureate Award includes a stipend of $8,000 in recognition of artistic excellence and to support the continuing development of the artist’s work.
The Culver City Artist Laureate award is made possible with a grant from the Culver City Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and funding arts and cultural individuals, organizations and institutions in Culver City.
