Palihotel Culver City

In this spotlight, we visit the Palihotel Culver City where it reimagines the former West End Hotel, a 1920s era boarding house, as a 49-room boutique hotel, restaurant and bar designed to highlight both the history and majesty of the Heart of Screenland and surrounding area. The entire building has been lovingly restored and infused with interiors that feel modern and urbane while maintaining its original bohemian art deco influences. The hotel features Simonette, an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar with a private courtyard that welcomes both hotel guests and locals alike.

The Culver City Farmers Market is a year-round, certified farmers market that operates from 2 PM to 7 PM every Tuesday, rain or shine. Located on Main Street in Downtown Culver City, this market has been sponsored by the City of Culver for over two decades in an effort to provide the surrounding community with farm-fresh produce and locally-crafted artisan foods. Families, friends, and colleagues alike experience each season's bounty of farm fresh produce provided to them by the industry's most respected growers. Local chefs add to an eclectic mix of shoppers who seek the freshest ingredients in order to ensure the highest quality and flavor in their dishes. Talmadge Lowe, owner of the Hi-Lo Liquor Market in the Arts District, says the market is the modern bodega, neighborhood store fit for any type of occasion. "We love our neighborhood. We love our neighbors. We love our regulars. We love the people who live up and down the block from us, the residential young family feel to it is great. Shopping small and local is the most important thing for the community."

Candance's goal is to lift up others. Whether it's their style and confidence in their clothes or if they are starting their own business, she is there to help. “One of the things I love about being a small business owner is that I get to speak with designers who are getting started, that are new to the business, they’re not really sure about their products or their services, so in a lot of ways, we give them a launching space where they start here, they display their products." “When we talk about shopping small, if you choose to shop here, you can experience 10 different local businesses that have products. Everything from jewelry to soap to dresses to jackets to a lot of things they’re creating.”

Lundeen's

Kathryn Lundeen saw a need for a local gift shop in the Culver City community. "If I was the one who really wanted the store, I felt like I wasn’t the only one. So I thought it was the right time when I did it and it just worked out.” She opened in 2008 and has felt the love ever since. “All about the people. The community is so small, I feel so lucky to be a part of it. I have customers who I’m lucky enough to call friends. It is such a great community.”

After being in Downtown Los Angeles for almost 15 years, Maya Roth said she wanted to move to a “cleaner, better, safer environment.” Roth loves being in the Culver City Arts District. “It’s a great community. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so much community as I have here.”

“Shopping small is important for me because it promotes small businesses," she said. "I think as a community, we’re making a big impact from a lot of small businesses rather than few big businesses.”
