Culver City Age-Friendly City Initiative

The City of Culver City is proud to be a designated Age-Friendly City that is a part of the World Health Organization and AARP network. As part of its Age-Friendly Communities planning, the City pursued two projects: the age-friendly community survey and listening session series.  It also created an Ad Hoc AARP Age-Friendly Community Program Subcommittee, which guided the planning process.

Background

The City conducted a community survey of individuals who are over age 50 and/or disabled (at any age). With AARP’s guidance , the City designed the survey to focus on interest areas and sent it to the community in a variety of ways over the course of approximately two months. Surveys were completed by 447 individuals.

Additionally, the City and AARP convened two community “listening sessions” on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 and Thursday, June 6, 2019. Seventeen people attended these sessions and offered valuable input.

Age-Friendly Community Survey Findings

On Monday, October 14, 2019, during a regular meeting of the City Council, the City’s consultant, Nancy Frank & Associates, presented the survey results. Several key findings are listed below:

  • 81% of survey respondents report that Culver City is an Excellent or Good place to age
  • 44% of survey respondents report household incomes of less than $50,000 year
  • Just 57% of survey respondents feel prepared for a community-wide emergency, such as an earthquake or fire

For the rest of the survey results and additional detail, please review the following documents on the City’s website:

The City Council also directed it be shared with the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission to identify actionable items for the Council’s consideration. Ideas will be presented at the PRCS Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.
